(Ladder logic)

Soft Servo Systems to Demonstrate 32-Axis Ethernet-Based Motion Control Technology at SEMICON Japan 2007

Soft Servo Systems was one of the first motion control companies to adapt a Panasonic Realtime Express™ high-speed servo network (an Ethernet-based, 100 Mbps network). The Panasonic Realtime Express (RTEX) interface system allows the control of up to 32 axes of MINAS A4N servo drives at a cycle time of 0.5 ms to 1 ms.

One of the advantages of the RTEX system is its ability to meet a wide range of I/O needs. There is I/O inherent in the system: each A4N servo drive provides 4 uncommitted inputs and 2 uncommitted outputs (for up to 16 servo drives).

Plus, there are two options for including additional I/O:

  1. A VersioBus II fiber-optic I/O network connected to the dual-link FPA-200 adapter board, daisy-chaining one to four IM-305 I/O modules (for between 64 and 256 general digital I/O points).
  2. Optional I/O via an AnyWireBus Gateway included in the RTEX Ethernet servo network. Up to 320 I/O points (digital, analog or pulse I/O) can be connected to the AnyWireBus Gateway with the AnyWire DB protocol.

The maximum number of I/O points available for an RTEX interface system is 672: 352 inputs and 320 outputs.

A 32-axis Realtime Express motion control product will be exhibited in Matsushita Electric's booth at the SEMICON Japan 2007 trade show, the world's largest international exhibition of semiconductor equipment and materials.

Exhibition Information:

SEMICON Japan 2007

Soft Servo Systems Profiled As a Success Story by Ardence, Inc.

Case Study: Soft Servo Systems, Inc. – Motion Control Systems

Overview
Founded in 1998, by MIT professionals, Soft Servo Systems, Inc. offers high-performing, innovative, and affordable motion control solutions to high-volume OEMs in the machine tool, factory automation and general motion control industries. By teaming with Ardence, Inc. (also founded by MIT professionals) during early product development, Soft Servo Systems integrated Ardence RTX's high reliability and real-time control, to be among the first to develop a truly PC-based servo controller in which a single, powerful Windows-based host computer performs all real-time motion control operations. The combined solution enhances reliability, reduces hardware costs, and increases performance over hardware solutions, which previously monopolized the motion control and CNC industry...

"The Soft Side of Motion Control"
New and improved software-based motion control systems reduce cost and increase flexibility for OEMs.
By Joy LePree, Technical Editor

"There are so many benefits [of soft motion] – from the flexibility to the connectivity to the reduced costs – that it's difficult to count" says [Joe] Zhou, [Vice President of Engineering with Soft Servo Systems]. "First, the connectivity of the PC is a plus. With PCs you can have either wired or wireless Ethernet connections that permit sharing, which is not possible with dedicated hardware systems. If you have a PC-based soft motion system, it's very easy to make information sharing flexible, easy, and cost effective, meaning someone from a remote location can access it." .......

"Newer soft motion control systems can demonstrate better flexibility and cost-effectiveness than their hard-wired counterparts. To demonstrate the flexibility of newer systems, Alex Sierra, Operations Manager at Soft Servo Systems, discusses an example of an OEM application that his company performed for Bridgeport by Hardinge, a large machine manufacturer.......
